God, people will complain about anything..like to see people even come close to doing what he does..alot of times you are allowed to change it if its not perfect,at least that is what they did in fernie,now they have an awesome set of jumps..I say good on ya Jay!

trust me, you can tell pretty easily. The run-in ramp is steep downhill, but the field they're built on slopes back up from there... on the two parks that I know are his.
I do support his work, and its great that he did so much with what he was given... but they could be better laid out.
We've modded the main ones in town extensively, and they are more rideable/trickable now.

But yea man, It's exactly like that. Kinda sad all the negative comments about it. People have no idea the time and effort it takes to actually get legal land ok'd for use. Which is why there are almost no legal spots here in the US. Instead most of them are built illegally etc here. Same thing as there tho, when someone does step up and take the time to legally build something, everyone just ends up dissing it rather than appreciating it.

It takes a ton of money. I have actually been through the legal process twice and well, it wasn't worth it for me to continue. Luckily it's a club who helped support the build, but man, it's expensive, time consuming etc. People act like Jay has nothing better to do with his life. He has a job (and probably a family) like everyone else to worry about. Even with this, he is nice enough to DONATE something to the community.

The comments above have me cracking up. People are so utterly helpless in today's world. Oooo the landings have rocks etc cry cry. Well, bring a shovel, a bucket of water, and a 50 gallon trash can full of good dirt, and fix the shit themselves instead of cry and expect the hand of god to come down and do it for em. it's a shame kids are so lazy these days. Or a lack of initiative/common sense. Either way...

the only annoying thing about jay hoots parks, is he insists on having all tables.. builds them out of like gravel. like there is a bike park in burnaby FULLY made of gravel. thats the dumbest thing u could do for a bike park considering ppl will be falling. now vancouver has finally not given him the contract, and gave it to another company, and look at what beautiful work we get http://www.pinkbike.com/video/149733/. its almost as if jay goes out of his way to make jumps not good. but yes it is better than nothing and yes i suppose they should be excited.

He insists of tables because most likely that is what he is allowed to do legally. Tables make it easier to get land etc due to the liability aspects of it.

leon-forfar, the Burnaby park is gravelled to help drainage and slow erosion because the park's foundation is unfortunately clay - have you ever tried to ride clay/silt jumps when it's been raining? The tables are required by the municipality to apply to the highest number of riders, including beginners who like to roll over the jumps, wrecking the lips...the same riders whose parents will sue the city if their kid falls while riding jumps above his skill level. I agree there should be a separate 'advanced' park, but the good riders need to organize instead of bitching at the 'beginner-friendly' parks.

Yeah I live in Burnaby and the bike park sucks. My buddy took a small spill on the gravel and he cut open his elbow so bad that it squirted blood out. I don't think he's ever going there without elbows on again.

He coulda gashed his elbow on anything. Point in wearing pads in the first place. Dirt will chew you just as bad (as my entire back and side prove). Just wear pads when riding. Not the park's fault he fell.

hate to say it, but how does one thing somewhere have to do with another? It's different city, different county, different legislation, different law enforcement etc. So in other words, you can't really say just because site a has this, site b should have no issues with it. Doesn't quite work like that in the adult world. We have laws and rules to abide by, and honestly, if the city says they want it some way in order to make it easier to pass the bill etc that will allow the project (or funding), it's best to do it. We face this issue all the time in airsoft. Full face masks at some fields, sealed goggles at others. ALl depends on what city your dealing with, and who is on both ends of the ordeal.

@rffr Re: the tables thing again - It's not actually a different country. Williams lake and North Saanich are both in BC, so I don't know where you're going with that...The legislation and law enforcement in this case is provincial, so it's actually the same. No need to be condescending. In the "adult world" it's called a precedent. The difference here is that one park is built the Hoots way, and the other was signed off by Kyle Mitchell, who's build parks in China, Madrid and California for BMX world championships. Not to knock Hoots at all, because he's a great guy and he's helped us build trails out here before, but let's be honest here; Who's the more experienced builder between those two?

I agree that the landings at the dirt jumps at Shaunessy are scary! There are rocks sticking out of the dirt everywhere! One cased landing and it's over! Although the skills section with the teeter totters and log rides are decent. I personally don't mind where it's located either. I like the nice wooded lot they chose. Lots of shady places to rest on the really hot days.

I don't care how shady or shitty it is, I just want something legal and nice to ride. But then again, some of you guys in Canada are uberly spoiled with parks and spots to ride, and well, it's showing. (not all Canadians are included in this, as many of you are stand up guys, but man, some of you are uberly spoiled IMO, and I think in others opinions also).

I give major props to the canadians keeping good positive comments about this. It's you guys who deserve to ride cool stuff, not people like dkidd, in which nothing is ever good enough for him. Is whistler hacked too dkidd?

Look man. I understand that you're upset by this, but I've been working in the industry, riding and BUILDING probably for longer than you have.
Badly made jumps are a hazard, and do more to dissuade groms from entering the scene than anything.
Perhaps if you had read my comments above a little more carefully as opposed to jumping the gun like that you'd realize that I do support jay's efforts. I have talked to the guy quite a bit, and he's a rad dude, but he works with what he is given, and thats usually not a lot. I say if you can't make a park worthy of the kids that are riding it, wait a while til you can do it right.

edit: look at what Drew Mitchell has done with a spot of land. He started with nothing, no land, no funding, etc. But he had drive, and waited until he had the materials and finances to do it right. and the park is awesome. All it takes is forethought.

No, I don't have the time. You might not have thought about it, but a bike park takes more than a few minutes to build and plan.
I do donate my hard-earned cash to promoting cycling in my area. I promote trail-building networks and groups, donate my time to build (legal trails) and also lead youth cycling camps at the well-built park areas in town. The money I spend on this I earn at my two bike industry jobs.
I don't have the materials, and I hack on people who don't have them only when they need them to complete the job successfully. you might have missed my above comment in your state of rage, but I pointed out a similar project fronted by Drew Mitchell, where sufficient materials were found and used. And lo and behold, the park is awesome.

And before you get all high and mighty, and make yourself look like even more of an ass-hat, think about this situation. These are parks you have never been to, have never ridden, and you are talking to and about people you will never meet. You are just spouting off because you love to read your loquacious e-comments, but its clear to all of us that you are painfully ignorant of the complexities of this situation. For your information, I have spend a fair bit of time fixing up one of hoots' parks, to make the jumps more ride-able and safer.

Hoots has done way more than anyone else for the progression of mountain biking. I love the controversy that comes up anytime he builds anything new! The Burnaby park was built with gravel for a reason, it's crazy rainy there, if it was built with dirt the park would be washed away by now. Hinton was built with REAL DIRT. The jumps are built as tables so people can learn to jump. If you are bashing Hoots, you are a moron and don't care about the progression of Mountain biking. More people don't ride than do. People need to learn to bike differently now than in the past, Hoot's parks are the best place to teach people getting into biking how to ride!

This project is a waste of time and money unless there is going to be regular maintenance done on the park. The problem is that Jay Hoots builds poor bike parks to begin with and then no one maintains them, so they go to complete shit. When I say he builds poor bike parks, I mean that there is no consideration in regards to sustainability. In all of the Jay Hoots built parks I have seen, including my local park, he doesn't do any grading or drainage and uses poor rocky soil, which is dangerous in itself and results in huge amounts of erosion. JAY HOOTS, PLEASE STOP BUILDING BIKE PARKS!!!!

Please take some deep breaths and relax. Thats good that there is going to be regular maintenance done on them. However, my local park was a different story. I would spend the time watering and repairing the jumps he had built, only to watch them be destroyed by little kids running on them and rolling the lips. I just gave up. Jay Hoots isn't the whole problem. There are lots of other factors that contribute to the jumps he builds going to shit.

Your very optimistic because someone else is going to build then... but you seem to forget the fact that shit is a 1 time build. You have to maintain and take care of it yourselves, alter stuff and build on yourselves. Basically all that Jay is doing is providing young kids with a way to legally build in an area. Last I heard, Jay Hoots was being paid thousands to build our park. And, as stated in my above comment, I tried to maintain the jumps, but it was pointless as little kids and the elements would destroy them so fast. Maybe I should have tried to organize a build day or something, but as you said, I'm just a dumb little 16 year old. But you're right, I shouldn't complain because I've just resorted to building my own illegal jumps, which won't be destroyed by little kids and the elements

I like it the way Jay builds it. Hes pretty much just laying the foundation down, and after a month or two kids will bring their own shovels and start adjusting it. We (the kids), appreciate what hes doing. All we do is adjust or fix up a few nitches and stitch it up. For example, we add on to the original lip of the jumps with some dirt/gravel/rocks laying around for more pop, or we dig out the middle of the jumps and make them higher.

Wow, didn't expect so many negative comments.... what can I say, I have no idea about how other Jay Hoots bike parks are build, but ours here in Williams Lake looks pretty sweet to me so far (It's still under construction). The dirt seems to be just fine and was hauled in. The local bike club made arrangements and picked the dirt. I've talked to the builders and they all seem to be knowledgable and stoked to work on the park. Local riders are testing everything during the building phase and jumps are getting adjusted accordingly. Maintenance will be performed by our local club and local trailbuilders. So far so good....

Me and 2 of my freinds were there today and the builders were kind enough to let us ride before it was even open. I must say the park is impressive!! Good dirt, lots of lines and some big jumps and berms. Some of the stuff on the smaller lines was difficult as the take off's were a bit steep for the size/distance of the jump. But nothing 10 minutes with a shovel or just a little getting used to won't fix. Overall, great job so far guys keep up the good work. This park will be the core reason for another mint roadtrip to Willies Pond real soon!! Thanks for lettin us in!!

As president of the Williams Lake bike club, i would like to send out an invitation to all to come and ride the recently completed Boitano Bike Park. The grand opening was Aug.8 and we had well over 200 riders ripping it up. Back flips and 360's were seen on the big line and kids of all ages were tearing through the rest of the park. Multiple options off the majority of jumps will keep things fresh and new lines are there to be found. Enough speculating on the quality of "another Hoots park", come and ride it and find out for yourself.

yes thank you, I'm tired of seeing this man get praised based on principal. Good on him for getting it organized and going, but fact of the matter is, he builds terrible parks. And don't tell me its due to time or money people, because the designs and layouts are plain poor. I found myself at interriver park a few months back absolutely boggled at how someone can take a piece of property like that, move all that dirt and end up with a set up that is 95% pointless and un rideable(sorry not just lack of maintenance to blame either). Thank god they re built the bmx track, now its not a complete waste of land.

The real shame in all these half hearted gravel hoots bike parks is that huge money went into them - over $200 000 in this case.

There are 3 within 10 kilometers of my house that all had plenty of money put in to them by the community and are all infinitely worse than the ones just built by riders on their own dime. I can only imagine what one of these good trail or jump builders could do with that kind of money and it looks nothing like these shameful parks i see scattered throughout north van. In concept its a really awesome thing that hoots does for the bike community but in practice its really sad seeing so much funding result in such lackluster deserted parks.

Hoots keep doing what you are doing, but let some local talent design and build these parks.

Then why don't you guys approach him and offer help? Why don't you guys start collecting money to give to him to allow further help. You do realize 200,000$ is jack shit in this case. He probably spend 195,000 of that money getting the land cleared. It takes lawyers, it takes help, ie PAYING PEOPLE for their time, etc.

It's up to the riders to step up if they want more. Since you live close Albatrosse, did you go approach Jay with a plan for a good park? Something designed on paper that would actually keep the attention of an adult? Not just saying ideas, like actually drawing something legit up? Where you there every day offering shovel help when it was being built? Did you rent a truck and or a bobcat to help out?

See what I'm saying. It's down to the ungrateful part because well, no one helped. It's like people in the us complaining about the president when they didn't vote to begin with. You gotta put in to take back. Too much taking, not enough giving IMO. You speak of all these good builders, then come up with a meeting time, and get everyone involved.

Once again, it all depends on the local government. Unless that park was built exactly in the same spot as JAY's there are absolutely 0 similarities between the two contract wise. Why are people so out of tune with how the adult world works. You need permits to practically put a mailbox up now. But then again, I doubt anyone under 30 has ever had to go through the process of getting a building permit, let alone one that has crazy liabilities attached to it. Let's put it this way... it's hard enough legally building a tool shed on the side of your house, let alone building one on a public street with a bottomless pit next to it (used the example to show the difference between liabilities of the two). I suggest you guys really ask your teachers, parents, etc about this if you want to know more. I'm sure they will repeat the exact same thing I did.

jay hoots is not a horrible builder... yes ive seen better parks but he does try to make it safe for everyone... i was involved in the build in langley called penzer park located on 200th and 48th. the park when it was first built with the help of supportive riders in the area was a pretty good park. it was later moddified to a better park by the riders who rode the bigger set who wanted to challenge them selves and lips were added and the second jump was gapped and it was a unreal set of dirtjumps(pics are in my profile from back when they were good)anyways where im getting with this that park is complete garbage now and yes i agree that he does not use very good dirt as theres rocks and anything else u can find in there, fact is the jumps were completly ruined when the city got the hands on them and rebuilt the biggest set and made it easier to do than the smaller sets, but the worst part is they covered everything in gravel other the the actual jumps so there is no run in to even grip on. all in all ig u help hoots build ur local jumps how u want them they will turn out alright its just the fact of not letting the city touch them

krys1993 - I believe Jay only designed the Port Coquitlam park, which was a pretty decent design for how little room he was given. Most of the building was done by volunteers, the 'non-gravel' material was given by the city, there is no budget for maintenance, and there are no 'experts' guiding what maintenance there is. The condition of the park has nothing to do with Jay. See Jay's Burnaby park for comparison.

its been said before and will be said again. when a bike park is installed into an area wanting one it is the companies do dillagence to install it to standards and spec. after the construction is completed it is the same as any other structure, municipal or not, for the people who use and ride the park to take ownership. ppl complain about the integraty of the park but have no ambition to take a shovel and pick the rocks out of landings and take offs and re-fill the holes and pack them. complaining about a park thats been worn out by local riders that are lazy and only want to ride but not build is ignorant. take action. and for the record skidding and riding backwards over lips isnt cool take a hint ppl!

Traveling 30+ hour drive is unacceptable to go ride a park. If I were going to drive that far I'd go up to whistler. See that is the thing we run into, everything worth a damn is so far out, you might as well just trek up to whistler, or stay local and do n star.

And yes, sure we have multiple woodwards. You guys are missing the point. We don't have many smaller parks like this. Sure we have our ski resorts and major parks but thats it. Outside of Northstar here in Nor Cal, we really don't have anything worth a damn. Also, your forgetting woodward cost at min a grand. We need FREE to ride parks. At most... what vans skatepark used to be when we had one in our city. 10 to ride for 3 hours.

For the record "herobikes" you're 17 and probab;y have never put any effort into fixing a jump up to make it pop. I have worked for Jay for a couple years now and everytime the dirt is great to work with! The only time it is not up to snuff is if the city won't pay to get it brought up and give us some garbage they dug out of some ones lawn. We only ask for the dirt, they provide it for us. As a hired contractor we don't control where they get the dirt from only make the most of it. We ask for the good stuff but don't always get it.
Every jump settles in in time and gets a bit lame but when they do it's time to pick up a shovle and perk it up. if the parks you have ridden aren't what you expected then put some love into them.
Please grow a little work ethic.
Jay builds amazing parks and gives so many kids opportunities to ride their bike in a rad setting! And that is sweet.

I wanted better trails in my town to ride, so I worked out a deal with the people who owned the land where existing trails were and grabbed a shovel, a hammer and nails, and a chainsaw then went to work.

Well cyrix, considering I live in Northern California in the bay area, getting open land requires either millions of dollars or hefty state funding. Aint gonna happen. Also, I've probably put more time digging than many people on this site. There are many hidden illegal trails that are around because of me and my buddies. Unfortunately we won't ever get em legal because well.... we plain ass don't have the time or money.

Also, using a chainsaw around here will get the world coming down on you. We live in the hippy capitol of the world... aint no cutting shit down around here without a major media ordeal. Heck you get fined for cutting a tree down in your front yard now. Green nazis.
